Shea Homes® brings variety to Houston, TX in the form of innovative open concept floor plans. Our homeowners fall in love with these inviting open concept plans for a variety of reasons. Your new Shea Home will keep your family connected in every room while offering independent spaces and promoting a comforting environment. We’ve brought you a few decorating tips from MP Studio Design interior design gurus, Shana Jacobs and Sierra Withers to enhance your open spaces.

Create Delineation

Rugs! Rugs! Rugs! Area rugs can define a space and zone areas in your open concept plan. They can be used to add warmth, texture, or a pop of color and reinforce the design details of your Shea Home. The key to creating recognizable rooms in your home is to add elements that break your line of sight. A great example is a nice bench. Placing a bench or accent chairs at the border of a room will make a noticeable change and are small enough to still have a continuous view throughout your home. You can also use faux plants or a standing mirror.

Consistent Themes

While we love to have fun designs throughout the home, having different colors and designs in each room generates confusion. Instead, keep rooms, such as your great room, dining room, and kitchen consistent, even with flooring. Utilize your fun ideas in other spaces in your home.

“Don’t be afraid to go dramatic where you can.” – Shana Jacobs, Principal Designer, Houston, TX
Be as bold as you want in your powder room, laundry room, entryways, or mudroom for example. Put all your color, patterns and flair into that one room. They are small and inexpensive places your guests will enjoy as well.

Corner to Corner Accents

Have fun with your accent walls but be sure to keep them corner to corner. If you do not have a corner to utilize, consider continuing the wall through the next room, or make your own corner by adding DIY wood trim to the edge of the wall.

Decorate to your Advantage

Playing with patterns and texture can give each room in an open concept plan its own identity. Incorporate this with items like decorative pillows, host dining chairs, or interesting ottomans. Other great ideas could be grouping your wall art or adding mirrors. Mirrors instantly double the size of your room and add light, which is great when using a darker color palette.

Lastly, consider adding medallions to the top of fixtures. You’ll add texture, pattern, and color, to your open concept Shea Home. “Adding medallions to the top of your lights adds interest and texture. You can paint them any color you want!” – Sierra Withers, Project Manager, Houston, TX
