Starting the New Year Off Right– Top Tips to Help You Get the Most Out of Retirement
There’s something exciting and refreshing about a brand-new year. It’s a chance to start anew and refresh those goals you’ve had in the back or your head—or for many, a chance to begin an entirely new chapter!
If that chapter is retirement in 2022 or starting to lay the groundwork for it, congratulations! You’ve worked hard to get where you are. Maybe you’re starting to get serious about deciding where retirement will take you—literally and figuratively. Here are several tips to help you figure out what’s next:

Write down what brings you joy. Most people look forward to this post-professional chapter of life as a chance to LIVE—perhaps getting back to doing some of the things they’ve loved in the past but set aside due to a busy schedule. So, spend a little time thinking about what makes you happy. Have you missed that hobby you enjoyed long ago? Do you want to move somewhere that the sun shines most of the year? Do you love being outdoors? Being active? Don’t limit yourself, just jot down some of the things you love and that you’ll want to consider in your planning.
Don’t forget to write your “Life List.” Remember that this is also a great time to try new things you’ve been dreaming of, and if you ask us, kicking off your Life List sounds more fun than ticking items off a Bucket List. That might mean trying new activities, picking up a sport, travelling or all of the above. And don’t be afraid to dream big! How have you envisioned retirement? What types of adventures or new experiences are on your mind? Put those dreams to paper. There’s no time like retirement to start checking off the list of longtime life goals!

Compare your life now to the life you want to live. Look at your life today. Does your daily routine bring you happiness? If not, what changes might make you happier or reignite your passion for life? For some, that “happy place” is a state of mind – a sense of belonging, for example – and less of a physical place. For others, where they live matters most of all, and the place they are today might no longer fit them. Ask yourself if your life today is putting you in the best state of mind. And if it isn’t, don’t be afraid to truly assess why not.

Look at your close community. For many, the empty-nester chapter brings a range of emotions—some happy, some sad. Perhaps your grown children are no longer nearby and are starting their own families. Maybe you and your spouse are seeking some new opportunities for adventure or ways to connect with each other. Think about where you live and how well it gives you a sense of community today. It’s common for many soon-to-be retirees to feel less part of a community as their children move out and their close friends begin their own “third-stage” lives as well.

Be honest with yourself about what more free time will feel like. For some, making the transition from a busy career to the relaxed pace of retirement is an unexpected and challenging adjustment. Suddenly faced with more free time than ever, it can cause feelings of boredom or even worthlessness. One of the best ways to make this easier is to look for new opportunities to fill that time with things that give you purpose and help add some structure to your time! That might mean exploring new interests, taking up a new activity, or taking classes. It might include joining clubs or interest groups or travelling with others.
