Now that the chaos of the holidays is over, many of us are hungry for change and a fresh start. A new year is the perfect place to implement new habits & routines to live the life you have always wanted and to reach the goals that you have set. These new habits usually include healthy eating and more exercise, but we would argue that home improvement and care is just as important (your home is where you do most of your living after all!). As you take a look at the coming year with a fresh set of eyes, here are a few New Year’s resolutions for your home:

Remove Excess

Put your house on a diet by getting rid of the junk! Schedule a day to take a good, hard look at all of the things you own, recall the last time you used them, the likelihood that you will use them within the next six months and the value that they bring to your life and your home. If you find items that haven’t been used in ages, that you aren’t likely to use in the near future and that don’t serve a specific purpose in your life or home, put them in a pile and let them go. This practice is simple, yet life-changing when you experience the mental space that is cleared up by simply decluttering.

Get Healthy

What better way to get healthy than adding a garden or planting a fruit tree? Make sure you involve the kids – they’re more likely to eat it if they grow it! Start small and see what happens. A window box filled with fresh herbs is a fun and easy way to give your green thumb a test run. And remember – indoor plants don’t just look great. They help purify the air too.

Make Safety a Priority

Help ensure your family’s safety by making sure your home is equipped with functioning smoke detectors, a carbon monoxide detector and a radon detector (available at most hardware stores for under $20). Check your door and window locks and pool fencing and gate to make sure everything is in good working order.

Freshen Up

Take advantage of all the great January “white sales” and replace your dingy old blankets, bedspreads, sheets, and towels and new ones. While you’re at it, give your home a deep clean so it really sparkles. Who says you have to wait for spring?

Get Social

Now that you have a de-cluttered, fresh, clean, house, call up your friends and do a little entertaining! Have your neighbors over for coffee or friends or family over for dinner and catch up. Plus, if you know anyone looking for a new home, invite them to check out one of Shea Homes® Arizona’s newest community, Carino Villas.
