Tuesday, February 28th marks the beginning of the 2023 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo®, an annual event and local tradition attended by millions of people over the years. Here’s how Houston-area Shea homeowners can get in the Rodeo spirit whether you go to the Rodeo or not.

What is the Rodeo?

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo® is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes local agriculture and supports educational programming through a three-week-long annual event for all ages. The 2023 Rodeo takes place from February 28th to March 19th at NRG Park. You can learn more information and purchase tickets at rodeohouston.com.

For many Houstonians, the Rodeo is one of our city’s cultural touchstones. No two Rodeos are exactly the same, with activities, vendors, and performers often changing from year to year. The event boasts a wide variety of attractions that appeal to almost every type of attendee – even those who don’t consider themselves “country.”

Fun for kids

Many Houston-area schools share in the Rodeo spirit with an annual Go Texan Day, where students get to dress up and learn about our state’s history. Some families like to celebrate Go Texan Day at the Rodeo Roundup, which is being held this year on February 24th at Hermann Square. You can also get your child in a wild west state of mind by watching the Downtown Rodeo Parade on February 25th.

Several Rodeo activities are designed with children in mind. Young families can have fun all day at the Junction, with educational exhibits, interactive shows, carnival games and rides, and hourly Mutton Bustin’. Kids can also enjoy visiting animals – from hatching chicks to riding ponies.

Fun for adults

If you’re looking for a more mature environment, the Rodeo offers adult-oriented activities throughout the day and night. Dance till midnight at the Hideout. Browse the wares of hundreds of retail vendors. Treat your palette at the Champion Wine Garden.

Music-loving Houstonians get excited for the Rodeo’s eclectic, star-studded concert lineup. While kids are allowed, these shows often run late into the night.

What else is there to do?

Folks of all ages are welcome to the Rodeo’s many livestock-related shows. Watch cattle herders, bull riders, livestock breeders, and other experts show off their skills. Have a look at the student art gallery, or hear amateur vocalists sing their hearts out at Rodeo Rockstar®. If you like wildlife, farming, camping, or other outdoorsy hobbies, you can find especially interesting programming at the Ranching & Wildlife Expo.

The Rodeo schedule includes various themed days, such as Armed Forces Appreciation Day, Sensory Friendly Day, and Go Tejano Day.

And no Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo® is complete without a showcase of our city’s bustling and diverse food scene. Try something new and delicious!

What if I don't make it to the Rodeo this year?

The Rodeo aims to educate the public on Houston’s history while providing opportunity and support for those who shape the city’s future. There are still numerous ways to celebrate during Rodeo season. In the spirit of the event, you can support a local business, take time to connect with nature, explore the city around you, or donate your time or treasure to your favorite local charity. After all, as a Shea Homes® Houston homeowner, you are a valued part of this community.
