So, there you are, enjoying a hot cup of cocoa, when it hits you… It’s a few days before Christmas, you’re hosting, and your house is nowhere near the winter wonderland that it needs to be!
Fear not! Here at Shea Homes®, we pride ourselves on providing the ultimate home experiences, and the holidays are no different! Our gift to you this year: a couple of quick and easy (yet effective!) tips to get your home into the festive spirit. And the best part is that you don’t even have to head to the craft store for these decorations.
Tip #1: Dress Your Food to Set the Mood
First off, let’s get something straight: there is nothing wrong with a store-bought holiday buffet. Some people use their ovens for baking homemade treats, while others simply use it to warm up a pie they picked up on their way home. With that said, what really matters here is the presentation you’ll be offering your guests when they arrive. By using your best serving bowls and cake stands in place of plastic trays, even you will think your food now has a certain extra something to it!
Tip #2: Smells like Holiday Spirit
The atmosphere of a holiday home isn’t complete if all five senses aren’t celebrating, and one of the most overlooked senses can easily be smell. We skirt by, relying on delicious food to fill the air, while others turn to themed scented candles to carry us along peppermint cookie waves through the evening. We’ve got something even better in mind; something that’s homemade, with the right amount of artisan creativity and budget-friendliness, this is an easy DIY you can do today!
Using items from you own pantry and fridge, you can brew up the perfect seasonal sensory experience for you and your guests, and become known for your artistic take on setting the ambience. By bringing fragrant ingredients to a boil and letting the natural scents fill the air, you’ll create a unique experience that won’t soon be forgotten. This hack allows you to experiment and create a scent that works perfectly for any holiday themed party. We’re huge fans of cinnamon ourselves!
If you’d like to recreate the scent we showed in the video above, here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 Medium-sized Sauce Pan
- A Stove top
- 2-3 Cups of Water
- 3 Cinnamon Sticks
- Orange Zest
- 1- Slices of Ginger
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
Tip #3: Wrapping up Decorations into Storage
When your holiday party begins to wind down (being the huge success it was!), it’ll be time to store all that festive décor. While scraps of wrapping paper and tinsel will seemingly litter the floor for ages, we can all agree that the most difficult part of holiday storage is the lights. They come in wound bundles, nestled perfectly in a box when you buy them, but once you’ve unraveled and stretched them out, there’s no way they are going back into the original packaging. To help with this frustrating task, we’ve come up with the perfect (and budget-friendly) solution: paper towel roll light holders.
By snipping a slit into one side of the paper roll, you can then wrap the lights up until you come to the end of the string. Cut another slit into the opposite end of the roll, and you’ve got an organized way to store your lights without 12 months of thinking of the knots that await you come next winter. This DIY storage tip is also a great way to upcycle paper rolls that would otherwise be recycled or thrown out!
