The final leaves have fallen from the trees, holiday lights are sparkling in the streets, and the scent of cinnamon and pine candles fill our homes. The holiday season has arrived and it won’t be long until visitors are knocking at your door. Make your house feel like a second home by providing your guests with a sleeping space that’s a little better than a lumpy pull-out couch or a deflating air mattress. Shea Homes floorplans make it easy to turn any spare room into an inviting and comfortable guest room. So, how can you make the most of the space? We’ve pulled together some ideas on how to create and decorate an inviting guest room for visitors this holiday season.

Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas & Furniture Tips

Think about your favorite hotel stays. What furniture did you find essential and homey? This is a good place to start as you plan what furniture to include in your spare room. By utilizing multipurpose furniture items, you will be able to create a relaxing space without breaking the bank. Here are five essential furniture items you will need to create the perfect guest room:

1. Comfortable Bed
A good night’s sleep is key to helping guests feel comfortable and relaxed. While you might not want to spend a lot of money on a bed that is infrequently used, make sure you are investing in a mattress that you would be happy sleeping on yourself. Top the bed with a nice set of sheets and pillows in a variety of different sizes, shapes, and firmness to make it extra inviting and comfortable.

2. Nightstand with light
Nightstands allow guests to keep anything they may need throughout the night, such as a glass of water or their cell phone, within an arm’s reach. Be sure to place a lamp with a hand-operated switch on the nightstand to make it easy for guests to get into bed without having to stumble around in the dark.

3. Drawers and storage
Allow your guests to unpack and unwind, without constantly tripping over their luggage, by providing storage space within the room. Small dressers allow enough space for guests to put away clothes in the drawers. They can be used as a stand-alone piece or doubled as a nightstand if you are tight on space. If you have a closet in the room, have it clear and set with empty hangars.

4. Table or desk space
Include a small side table or desk so that guests can spread out their smaller items or can have a space to work if necessary.

5. Extra seating
Not everyone enjoys sitting on a bed while getting ready or organizing their things. If you have space, include a bench or a comfy chair so that your guests have a place other than the bed to kick back and relax. These pieces of furniture can also double as extra storage or luggage stands.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin filling your guest space.

  • Arrange for maximized open space: Keep large areas clear so it’s easy to get luggage in and out. Make sure guests can easily walk from the door to the bed and that there is plenty of room to maneuver around each piece of furniture.
  • Place nightstands and tables near outlets: Keep outlets accessible so that it is easy to plug in devices. If possible, try to place desks and tables near outlets so guests can plug in while they work. Make sure there is also an outlet close to the bed and nightstand so that guests can keep their phone close while charging overnight.
  • Create a space to relax: Make your guest room a place for visitors to decompress and have some alone time. Keep blankets easily accessible and place curtains on the windows so that exhausted traveling guests can take a mid-day nap. Also consider having a television or a good selection of books in the room for personal entertainment.

Once you have the space arranged the way you like, you can move on to decorating the room. When choosing your decorations, you can use items in a style like the rest of your house, or you can use the space for experimenting with different styles and pieces that have been catching your eye.

No matter what style you choose to decorate with, be sure to include small touches that will help make your guests feel more at home. Freshen the space with live flowers or plants and put the wifi password on the desk for easy reference. Leave out bottles of water, towels, and essential toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, razors, etc.) for your guests to use during their stay. All of these extra amenities will make your guests more comfortable and they will be thankful you took the extra time to make sure they felt at home this holiday season.
