Visitors to One Oak are delighted to watch Shea Homes'® brush management specialists in action. A small herd of 95-100 goats are now clearing 24 homesites, eating weeds and scrub brush as they move from pad to pad. Easily scampering up rocky slopes and harder-to-reach areas, the herd consumes everything right down to the ground.

“But they don’t touch the roots, which is beneficial for erosion control,” says Vanessa Linn, vice president of sales and marketing for Shea’s San Diego division.

“Some of these pads are up to one-acre, so this is a big job. By employing the goats, we avoided using heavy machinery or chemicals. And the by-product of their work - also known as “dung pellets” - actually fertilizes the land.”

The herd is moved from lot to lot and “penned” on each lot using an electric wire, which doesn’t harm the goats, but is a very effective method of control. The goats are protected night and day by two Great Pyrenees, a breed long used for livestock management and protection.

“These dogs are smart and will not arbitrarily run off to chase a lone coyote, which may be employed as a decoy by its pack,” says Linn. “The dogs hang back and watch for trouble, and if it comes, these powerful dogs are fearless in protecting the goats.”

Although once a novelty, goats are seen much more frequently these days around San Diego County.
“Because we had so much rain this year, the weeds were a real problem,” says Linn. “Not only are the animals extremely cost effective and efficient, but our homeowners and visitors are really enjoying watching them work.”
The goats are owned by Environmental Land Management of San Diego.

Located at 3560 James Court at approximately 800 feet above sea level, One Oak features spectacular views from on property with a storied pedigree. The history of this 130-acre parcel reaches back to the heirs of the Chandler family, a name familiar to all Southern Californians for its long-term ownership of Los Angeles Times newspaper. Shea Homes complied with the understanding that 70 percent of the property would be preserved as open space and administered by the Escondido Creek Conservancy.
