It’s nearly 2020 – the year everything may come into focus (pun intended)! 2020 will bring some fun and unexpected home design trends  While previous years have seen the rise of the all-white interiors and subtle, soothing shades, the first year of the new decade is promising bigger, bolder, and brighter design trends that walk the line between futurism and a call back to the art deco of the 1920s.

Ready to get roaring into a new decade of design?

Back in Black
Darker interior tones, especially black, are on the rise. Whether it’s on an accent wall, cabinets, or a sofa, large black fixtures in your home add an element of sleek sophistication and in instant shot of cool. Bathrooms in particular are seeing an uptick in black elements, as they give a stylish and unique boost to the design of an often-overlooked area of the home.

Join the Navy
The deep, soothing blue of navy has been popping up in more and more bedrooms, and it’s easy to see why – just ask the experts at the Pantone Color Institute, who named their navy-esque shade Classic Blue the 2020 Color of the Year. Pantone cites the sense of rest, peace, and tranquility that this color brings, like watching the sky settle into an inky dusk. By bringing this atmospheric shade into the most rejuvenating spaces in your home, you can add a layer of relaxation that also contrasts beautifully with many of your other furnishings. Both navy and black pair well with wood furnishings and metal accents like bronze and brass.

Now don’t think that just because black and navy are coming to center stage that your home needs to look like a stormy day. Bright colors and fun patterns have just as much place in your design portfolio in 2020.

Cook Up Some New Colors
Kitchen design of the 2010s was dominated by monochromatic color palettes, especially white. With the new decade, you can expect to see bolder and more creative uses of color in the kitchen. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your cabinetry, consider going for a light wood, or even something in brighter shades like blue, green, purple, or the rising star: yellow! Experts expect euro-style cabinetry, in particular, to make a surge in the coming years, as its frameless construction gives it a sleek, streamlined look. For those who love to eat and entertain, let this space be as bright and bold as the flavors you’re cooking up.

Take it Back to the 20s
2020 may be here, but that’s no reason to throw away some of the famous trends of the 20th century; in fact, vintage staples blend incredibly well with some of the other trends we’ve mentioned. Spooled legs and spindles add a nice homey touch, as do a few curated pieces of antique art. Make an excursion to your local antique store and find some furnishings that ground your home in times gone by.

Bold Wallpaper
In that same vein, bold wallpapers are making a resurgence, especially in smaller spaces like guest bathrooms, foyers, and powder rooms.  These smaller spaces can be a great place to experiment, and to add a new design dimension to your home. It’s these thoughtful touches that will really wow your guests!
