By mid-morning in July, the sun is already blazing. As the temperature climbs fast, the window for a comfortable morning outside starts to close. Getting out early makes the difference between a good trail day and a rough one. Residents of The Canyons™ have a head start, with trail access right outside their door and other notable destinations within a short drive.
Start in the Community
The Canyons™ has miles of paved and soft-surface paths winding through the community, with options for whatever pace you're after. The single-track mountain bike trail is a workout, and the shorter loops are the right call for an early run or a casual walk before the day heats up. Most routes are dog-friendly, so bring the pup and leave early to catch the morning light along the canyon terrain!

Daniels Park Trail: Bison Before Breakfast
A short drive from the community, you’ll find the Daniels Park Trail, which is one of the more rewarding easy hikes near Castle Pines. At the 1.6-mile mark you'll likely find yourself standing very still while a 2,000-pound animal grazes thirty feet away and pays you no attention. Views stretch from Pikes Peak in the south to Longs Peak in the north, and the trail is open year-round.

Hidden Mesa Open Space: Views Without the Crowds
Hidden Mesa Open Space sits between Castle Pines and Castle Rock with about 4.7 miles of natural surface trail across mesa, meadow, and scrub oak terrain. The trail climbs from Cherry Creek to the mesa top, where Front Range views open up and hawks circle on most summer mornings. Difficulty ranges from moderately easy along the valley floor to moderately difficult across the rocky south rim.
The Case for Going Early
July mornings in Colorado have about a two-hour window before the heat takes over, and afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily occurrence by midsummer. Getting on the trail by 6 or 7 a.m. means you're back home before either becomes a factor. At The Canyons™, that kind of morning is built into the location.
