December has arrived, and it’s officially time to bring a little evergreen magic into your home. If you’re ready to turn your holiday tree hunt into a full-day adventure, The Canyons™ in Castle Pines is perfectly placed for it. From forest permits to holiday playlists, here’s everything you need to know to make finding a tree festive from start to finish.

Getting a Permit
The closest and most popular spot for cutting your own tree is the South Platte Ranger District, which is part of Pike National Forest. Before you go, you’ll need to get a permit. Permits are $20 and must be purchased online in advance. Take a few minutes to review the designated cutting areas and tree size limits, as well as ensuring your vehicle is ready for snowy mountain roads. Pro tip: Pack a tarp to help drag the tree back and keep your car sap-free.

Make It a Full-Day Tradition
After you’ve found your tree, consider making a few more stops before heading home. Castle Rock is an easy detour if you’re looking for a place to warm up. Grab a burger and fries at Crave Real Burgers, or stop by Lost Coffee for a sweet treat and a caffeine refill. You could also head to Downtown Parker for local shops, lunch spots, and a dose of small-town holiday charm.

Back at Home
Once you’re home and the tree is through the door, the holiday glow really starts to settle in. Cue up your favorite holiday playlist, untangle the lights, and let the scent of fresh pine fill the room. If your home has a fireplace, even better. Whether you’re sipping cider, sneaking another cookie, or stepping back to admire your slightly crooked masterpiece, it’s all part of the tradition.

End the Day with Something Warm and Welcoming
After a day in the forest and an evening of tree-trimming, there’s one more stop worth making. The Exchange Coffee House is a favorite gathering place at The Canyons™ — the kind of spot where neighbors unwind, kids warm up with hot chocolate, and seasonal drinks come with a side of conversation.
