It’s time! The scorching hot Arizona heat is among us. While there’s no denying that most of us are eager for sunny summer days, it’s important to take care of our bodies in these high temperatures. Shea Homes® is here to offer some helpful advice to keep you cool for the summer!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Did somebody say hydrate? One of the most important things to remember while being in the sun is hydration. Our bodies need water to quench our thirst, maintain a normal body temperature and protect our organs. A convenient way to remember to drink water is by carrying a water bottle with you because they are portable and easy to reuse. Another bonus, many water bottles have built-in isolation that helps keep them cool throughout the day.

Invest in Good Quality Sunscreen
The UV index getting all the way up to seven in the middle of the summer, means the average person can burn within six minutes, it is important to protect your skin from those harmful rays. When choosing a good-quality sunscreen, be sure to verify an SPF factor of 30 or higher. Remember to apply 15 minutes before heading out, reapply often and give yourself a generous coat.

Water Balloon Fights
Talk about an easy and fun way to stay cool! Water balloon fights are the perfect activity to engage family and friends. Pick up a bag of balloons from your local convenience store, fill with water and let the fun begin! A water balloon fight will have you basking in the sunshine, staying cool and even adding some outdoor exercise to the mix.

Make Frozen Treats
Nothing says summer like a frozen treat! A simple and effortless way to beat the heat is making homemade popsicles! All you need is a popsicle mold, yogurt of your choice and whatever mix-ins you like! This could be strawberries, chocolate chips, fresh fruit, or peanut butter. First start by adding the yogurt of choice to the bowl and stir in your favorite mix-ins. When finished, add the mixture into the mold and let sit in the freezer for 2-4 hours. This recipe can also be done with sorbet, ice cream, fruit juices and smoothie mixtures. Get creative with your recipes!  These homemade popsicles can also be stored for months, making it the perfect way to enjoy a sweet treat at any point in the summer.

Visit Cool/Shady Spots
Summer is the ideal time to get outdoors and explore beautiful places. Take a quick visit to your local park and enjoy the shaded areas with a loved one. Make your visits more enjoyable by packing a picnic but be sure to have your water bottle on deck! Heading to many of lakes is another great way to enjoy the weather without overheating!

If you’re wanting to spend more time at your home, enjoy the shaded patio like this one here in the Storyrock community. Looks like the perfect spot to host your next water balloon fight!

Wear Lightweight Clothes
Summer fashion doesn’t have to be boring! Choose clothing that is made of light-weight fabrics like linen, cotton voile, cambric, and silk. Shorts are usually a better choice when spending time outside in the summer. And there is much to be said about UV clothing. Not only will it provide you with an extra layer of protection from the sun, but many brands are stylish and comfortable.

Remember, take care of yourself this summer, and follow these simple steps to beat the heat! Your body is made to adapt to these environmental changes, but you can be sure to take matters into your own hands, to be even more proactive and safe.
