"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." – Jordan in The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
As temperatures fall in the Foothills, students settle in for the year, and pumpkin spice pops up — well, everywhere — many Coloradans are starting to think about autumn entertaining. Fall celebrations lend themselves easily both to informal get-togethers as well as more formally planned festive affairs. Whichever suits your fancy, we’ve collected a few tips to help you show off your Shea home’s hospitable potential.
Set the Mood
Autumn's natural beauty provides the perfect palette for festivities. Put gourds, pumpkins, and corn stalks on your front steps to make a strong seasonal first impression. Tie red, orange, and golden scarves to banisters, or spread them on tables under snacks, drinks, or candles. Scatter colored leaves for haphazard elegance or carefully curate hanging art to draw the eye to your walls. Consider colors that aren't usually associated with the fall — try cocoa instead of crimson or a pale mushroom rather than maize.
Feed Them Well
Make life simple and delicious for your guests by setting up skewer stations — who needs tableware? From gouda peach skewers or beet salad on a stick to Low Country broils and filet mignon speared with rosemary, you can turn an afternoon of prep work into a party success with quick and easy clean-up. Also, if your sweet tooth needs a little pick-me-up, use your extra skewers for classic caramel apples complete with all of the toppings!
Nothing forges togetherness like engaging conversation between friends. Everyone had a favorite childhood Halloween costume, or maybe someone's got the scoop on the best place to watch fall colors in the Rockies. Cue your guests to swap stories by setting out bowls with conversation starters on slips of seasonally appropriate orange paper. We know these adorable turtle bowls are meant for salsa, but we think they're the perfect place for pumpkin prompts!
Light the Way
Since it does get dark earlier in autumn, ensure you've provided a cheery glow for all your gathering spaces so that guests feel comfortable staying late. String lights are pretty no matter the time of day, so hang them high and turn them on for the entire event. Add larger lamps with extension cords or create candle-filled tables that can be lit at twilight to cast a warm gleam through the dim hours. On side tables and coffee tables, float mini-pumpkins with their middles cut out to hold tea lights.
Keep It Cozy
We’re used to layering clothing in Colorado because we know the temperatures go down with the sun, no matter the season. When your guests are enjoying a fire pit, a cozy conversation, or gazing at constellations like Andromeda and Pegasus, you can easily cozy up your outdoor seating spaces by adding blankets. Soft and snuggly throws will help keep guests warm as they stick around into the evening creating lasting memories.
